Timber products - care and maintenance

Initial Surface treatment

Our elements are manufactured from heartwood (pine) and are delivered in surface aqueous impregnated (2-ECO) version. Being manufactured of heartwood, our elements are dry rot proof. Yet, the elements must be painted and maintained properly in order to uphold the warranty and maintain their appearance and trouble free operation for many years.

Elements delivered untreated
As soon as possible after delivery, the elements must be primed to protect the surface against attack. Prime with SUPER SECU no. 2 wood preservation – or similar turpentine based preparation. If you wish to use water-based preparation, prime with DK-1 wood preservation, suitable for water-based treatment.
The priming must be followed by three layers of DK-5 wood preservation, water based or similar and must be rubbed down between the first and the second layer.
As a minimum the outside frame side must be primed before installation. The entire element must be treated immediately upon installation.
The elements must dry at a temperature higher than 5Cº.

Opaque treatments (paint) will normally last longer than translucent treatments (wood preservation). Colourless treatments are not adequate for protection against sunlight and fading – inside or outside. Our warranty lapses if colourless treatment is used.

Choose a system for surface treatment that is tested and approved in accordance with CEN/TC 139/WG2/N46 and follow the instructions given by the manufacturer regarding application, layer thickness etc. We recommend alkyl or plast- based preparation treatments.

Elements delivered treated
The treatment is done industrially, under normal circumstances with Teknos Schou’s products, which are ALKYL AND PLAST-ALKYL based. (Teknos Coatings Ltd – Unit E1, Heath Farm, Banbury Rd, Swerford OX7 4BN Tel 01608 683 494 Fax 01608 683487)
In some cases other treatment systems may have been used. If you have any queries, call Eurojoinery , stating the code standing on the DVC-label.

Resin spots
Wood is a living material. Formation of resin on the surface must be considered acceptable. If the resin is formed as little drops on the paint, it is possible to carefully wipe it off with spirits or turpentine – but be careful that the paint does not come off at the same time. If the resin is formed as spots under the paint, 2 or 3 years should go by before re-establishing the treatment. The resin may then be scraped or grinned away before finally painting the element.
Follow the instructions given under ”Maintenance”.
Discolouration may also occur as yellow patches in the surface.

Ongoing door and window maintenance

Doors and windows require maintenance when the surface is no longer intact (cracking or peeling). When the surface of bottom glazing beads and bottom frame/sash shows signs of demolition, maintenance is required. Glazing beads/ bottom frame/sash must be checked once a year. Do not apply paint to wet wood (max. 15% moisture content in the wood).

Remove all loose paint and sand the wood until healthy wood re-appears. Paint still sticking to the wood must be sanded to prepare the surface. Clean the surface with an appropriate priming detergent. Bare wood must be treated with a priming detergent against dry rot in order to ensure the continued durability of the surface treatment. Spot treat bare areas twice with intermediate slight grinding. Paint the entire surface once. When changing the colour – or if the surface is much damaged – it may be necessary to apply two or three layers for full coverage.

The thresholds of all doors (if not aluminium) are treated with Jupex 45. After-treatment according to requirement.

Re-painting guidance

  • Before painting/treating the elements, always read the instructions on the packaging thoroughly.
  • All surfaces must be clean and dry before treating.
  • Do not paint weather strips or movable parts in hinges and fittings.
  • Do not cover any warranty labels.
  • Painting to the edge becomes easier if you use masking tape.
  • Do not close opening sashes before the paint is completely dry. (This is especially important at
  • Rebated sashes as they otherwise may be glued together at the rebate)
